Students in our 4th grade classes have been learning about and using technology. On parent night, the parents of our 4th graders watched a video their students made describing topics they had learned in class. They also were able to use a QR code reader on their smart device to listen and watch their student read a letter to a child they had written to in Uganda. Mr. "H" our digital coach and the 4th grade teachers helped the students create the videos and QR codes.

The 2nd grade enjoyed celebrating John Chapman's birthday. We did several apple activities. What's your favorite kind of apple, how to keep a cut apple from turning brown, and we had a special guest Johnny Appleseed!

We did five activities as well: 1) learned of plants in Utah and got a marshmallow target game, 2) learned the legend of how the flute came to be and got to decorate their own Indian flute, 3) got to decorate a t-shirt with a boot print to talk about activities to do in nature, 4) cracked a code to make a book about different animal paw prints, and 5) made a necklace from tree branches and beads.
Even though it rained and we couldn't go hike the Grotto, we still had a great time.

The Santaquin Elementary reading rodeo was started a few years ago as an incentive to get the students reading over the summer. Our students had to read 60 days this summer to participate in the rodeo. The events in our rodeo are the stick horse race, lassoing a rocking horse, a snake in my boot, panning for gold, the horse shoe competition and the bouncy horse race.
This year, our reading rodeo was a huge success as we had 250 students who qualified to participate. The students rotated through the different events. The kids had a great time doing all of the events but the bouncy horse race may have been the favorite as the horses were definately spirited and several kids were "bucked" off.
Mr. "H" told a funny story about an elephant, a whale, and a rabbit while we enjoyed smores. We finished off the day with Mr. Aryle doing a hide race and barrel racing by Mrs. Lyons, Mr. Argyle and Mrs. Teemant. Mrs. Lyons was the sure winner as Mrs. Teemant couldn't get Daisy the mule to go the right way and Mr. Argyle was a close second. Congratulations to all our participants in the rodeo! A big thank you to our reading rodeo committee and the PTA for making it happen. YeeHaw!
