During the month of February, first grade learned about Abraham Lincoln and that he lived in a one room log cabin.  The students learned about how a log cabin was constructed.  Then, the teachers taught a CMI math lesson that involved all the students in counting and bundling popsicle sticks in groups of tens to see how many the class had. Students were able to count large numbers of sticks counting by tens.  After counting the initial group of sticks, the teacher gave them more sticks as it was determined that in order for each student to build their own log cabin more sticks would be necessary.  In the end, each student had 68 sticks to build their own replica of a one room log cabin.
